Non Profit

It is the mission of the U-District Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to inspire kids to live healthy lives. We are committed to helping our students grow by coaching them about good nutrition, staying active and setting goals.

Mentoring Program

One Guiding Principle: No Child Walks Alone

The U-District Foundation Mentoring program matches committed, caring adults with vulnerable children, creating long lasting positive relationships that act as a catalyst for hopeful futures. We offer two flexible ways to serve children in the Spokane area: pick up your student at their home or school for an outing in the community twice each month, or meet your student at their school once each week.

The Impact

Our students:

  • Are less likely to start using drugs and alcohol.
  • Set higher educational goals and are more likely to attend college.
  • Are less likely to skip school or classes.
  • Are more likely to engage in athletics or other activities.
  • Experience fewer symptoms of depression.

What Our Mentors Tell us

  • Mentoring is fun! One mentor calls it her mandatory play time. We lean into fun to build trust.
  • You will advocate for your child, connecting them to resources and expanding their horizons.
  • While your student will grow to value you in their life, you also will grow richer with them in yours!
  • We can practically guarantee this – mentoring will be the most rewarding volunteer opportunity you’ve ever done!

Activities

Our students and mentors go on regular outings together to develop healthy, trusting relationships. They go to ball games, take walks, ride bikes, go on hikes, decorate pottery, explore books, museums and shows – the list is limitless. The goal is connection.

Commitment

Mentors with busy schedules find our commitment levels manageable. Our community-based mentoring requires just two outings monthly, each lasting two hours or more. Mentors coordinate directly with their mentees’ families to establish convenient schedules for both parties. For those preferring our site-based program, the commitment is even lighter—just 30 minutes weekly during your student’s lunch period.
